Dragon Age: Inquisition

The reviews are coming in. And it's good... if you love Dragon Age...which seems like a subjective way to rate the game.

All the reviews say something to the effect of "Dragon Age is back to its roots!" But the thing is, I'm not sure I like the roots. Seems a bit tedious to me. And they also say that the story is lame/weak. So to me, there's little reason to play much. You're gonna need more to keep me hooked for 90 hours than a overly detailed RPG system. But what do I know? I'm not a game journalist/reviewer, I'm just a potential customer, the only opinion that SHOULD matter to devs.

It's getting everything from 85 to 100. I'll be interested to see what Giantbomb says about it.

Tell Tale Game of Thrones

It's going to be a six episode season. I wonder if it will cost the same.

Overwatch from Blizzard

So I missed a few stories this last week. My bad. One you'd be interested in is this.

After 17 years, Blizzard finally has a new original game. It's a classed based FPS called Overwatch. Think Team Fortress 2, but Blizzardized but still has that cartoony style. It's due out on PC next year.

Destiny who?

It's here man. Day zero pre-order got it pre-downloaded to my console, and I was playing it by 9pm PST last night!

I don't wanna overhype it for you. Do the whole "OHMYGOSHAVENGERSISTHE BESTMOVIEEVER!!!ICANTEVENBELIEVEITAAAAAAHHHH!!!" but it's good. Like, real good.

Dimple Records

Dimple continues to amaze me.

In the store, they sell used sports games that are 8 years or older, for $58.99.

But I just came across an Amazon listing of theirs, and they are selling a complete Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix - Limited Edition for $23.

Moral of the story? Even Dimple knows that Dimple prices are stupid.

Indie Binging

I played Octodad for PS4, it's hilarious. Controls are so annoying that I'm just laughing because it's so impossible. Cool art, a great 2 hour romp. Now to sell it and move on.

Entwined is beautiful, it's very similar to Dyad, but it's twin stick puzzle guiding, and it's kinda tough. It takes some real focus and concentration. Cool overarching story, but as Conan O'Brien said at E3 about this game, "that's beautiful...... no one is going to buy this"

Rainbow Moon

Very little game time lately, but I gave Rainbow Moon Vita a solid try. And drumroll.....

lame.

It's a final fantasy tactics, grid, turn based, all text, rpg. I'm sure it gets great. But when DMC is effing awesome right now... the choice is made.

Star Wars Battlefront Release Window!!

EA announced some news today.
First is that Battlefront will be first person, and is set for a holiday 2015 release. Can't wait.
They also said that Battlefield 5 will be coming out holiday 2016, but everyone fell asleep when battlefield was mentioned.

Xbox One Price Drop, again

Things are getting interesting

Microsoft is dropping the price of the Xbox One to $349. This includes their bundles. Meaning the AC Unity white console bundle is $349. Price change takes effect real soon and lasts all the way through January 2nd. This will move a couple million units for sure. It even has me going, "hmm... Master Chief Collection...."

Craigslist Purchases

So you know I have a game buying problem right? Well I'm at it again.

On craigslist, I found a guy with a picture of just a table full of... game stuff. Nothing definitive, all of it trashed and dirty, but I was intrigued. He asked for 60, i gave him 50. And I walked away with a complete Dreamcast with a game, a complete SNES with a game, 5-6 sports N64 games, 10 off brand gcube, dreamcast, and ps2 controllers, and about a dozen memory cards from ps2 dreamcast ps1 ds etc. And then a gamestop branded console carrying bag filled with, you named it, weed paraphernalia.

Everything was disgusting, including the seller. He was a 200lb 5 foot nothing guy, bald in his mid thirties, dressed like Eminem, a voice like he started smoking in the womb, and both hands wrapped in gauze from, "burns" as he put it. I wanted to tell him he mispronounced "bookies" but I wanted to get out alive. He packed everything in smoke-smelling Coors Lite boxes and I was on my way.

I didn't even check the items, I just drove away. I expected them all to be broken or something. But I unloaded everything, spent over two hours cleaning every corner of every wire and console and removed the "I bang b******" sticker from the top of the dreamcast. The grime on the cords was enough to make me queasy. But it all totally works!

The funny thing now is I bought it all with plans of flipping, but now I'm like, "hmm, I wonder what shenmue and super metroid are like"

I have a problem

AC Rogue and Unity

Like I said in text, I'm totally dark on both of these.
I will not be playing the PS3 version unless someone has a gshare for $2.
And the only thing I know about Unity is the resolution fiasco last week. In case you missed it, a Ubi director was quoted saying something to the tune of

"we couldn't get 1080p on one of the consoles, so we are making them both 900p 30fps, to avoid console debates"
which directly translates to
"the Xbone blows and couldn't handle the full game, so we nerfed the PS4 version."

The internet did internet things and shouted out in anguish.

Within a day, Ubi PR had issued a statement saying, "no no, none of that's true, we uh.. we held back to 900p because uh... um uh... the uh... A.I. yeah... yeah that's it. the AI is so intense and uh.. what else, c'mon guys gimme something here. How about uh... lighting? sure! yeah, the lighting is so uh.. real.  and ... P consuming. Yep, no 1080p for anyone."

Bayonetta 2 Reviews

It's getting insane reviews, Averaging 91 on metacritic. That's insane.
It's just a shame that it will never be played by anyone on WiiU.

GTZ Drama

So with the huge amounts of Destiny and Cod shares this gen, the google search "Cheap Gameshares" has brought in a ton of new trash to the site.
And they all want to be part of the Gshare forum so they need bronzes. Well they've been going into the digital threads and buying $0.10 steam codes and uv movies, etc. To get to 10 then insist on joining the shares.
Bill stepped in and has wiped out hundreds and hundreds of these lame trades and put them all in their place. It's fun to read some of the defenses the users put up. One kid claimed he was a double amputee and how dare we treat him that way. Some of the veteran users found his PSN name, his reddit page and his facebook, and found that he's some stupid kid with all his limbs fully in tact.

Beyond, not at NYCC

Double episodes this week. And this one is really good.

So apparently Colin has always been inverted Y axis on shooters, and then he played Destiny and he was suddenly like "this isn't right." Now, non-inverted still doesn't feel natural to him, but his brain has totally flipped he can't play inverted anymore. Weird.

Oh and DriveClub is still down. What a mess.

Podcast Beyond NYCC edition

You can skip this episode. It's about 30 minutes long, has a literal restart where they play the intro song again, and features our favorite segment.... Questions from the audience. Ugh

But from it, we get gems like these...

and my new favorite. Panda Musk was there with a ton of hand drawn swag, which was completely wasted on these fools. One guy gets a hand drawn 4 section poster of every character in Uncharted. When the guy tells the audience what he was given he says,

I sold my Destiny share
It's a solid game, and I'll definitely buy it back when all the sellables start putting their shares up for sale for $3. Super fun, but just lacked the direction (i.e. an actual end in sight) for me to get heavily into it.
I've put all my effort into Mordor.

COD Scheme

I totally called it, and now the COD gshare page is effed up. 13 groups, 2 filled and 11 with only a ps4 sell and non sell. Who buys on ps3 anymore anyway?

So I have an idea. What if you and I branch off? We each pay 5 bucks more for our sell/nonsell slots, and take the price off the ps3 spots, enticing the few PS3ers to share with us?? I'd get railed to death on GTZ, but it could work. May be the only way to avoid having to pay the full 35/25 or some garbage.

Driveclub Debacle

Sony botched this one pretty hard.
Driveclub came out yesterday. And as you know we're all supposed to get it for free with PS Plus. Yet when the store was updated, no free version was available. Thousands of tweets and comments to Sony and... nothing. No word. No explanation. Remember my motto, silence from Sony is bad.
Then today, like 2 hours ago. They finally released a statement that they didn't wanna overload the servers. So they're holding back the free version until an undisclosed time.

Flashback. Feb 2013, PS4 is announced with Driveclub and that it would be on PS Plus day one.
DC delayed at launch, and now, a year later, their promise is no good. It's very possible that the only reason people HAVE ps plus was for this game.

COD Cross-buy!

Advanced Warfare will be cross buy. This will make our gshares super cheap!
Let me know what kind of slot you want and I'll be sure to reserve one for you. Otherwise it'll end up being a cluster like Destiny, where 20 groups had a sell/nonsell filled for PS4, but no one wanted to pay for a PS3 sellable. There were about a dozen unfinished groups for that game.

Remote Play

Remote play totally works! It's so cool. I mean I def prefer on the tv. But wow, lag isn't too big an issue. I just hate the L2, R2, L3, R3 placement. They've gotta make an attachment to the vita to give it the extra buttons.

Smash Tactics

Super Smash Bros for 3DS came out on the 3rd of this month. Like 4 days ago. It sold a million copies over the weekend. One million. Oh that's not enough. It's up to 2.8 mil worldwide now.
So Nintendo's plan worked, keep the WiiU release date a secret until they blast sales on the handheld.
And then today they announced that Smash on WiiU comes out Nov 21st. Those tricky Japanese.
So it totally worked. Except that, y'know, there aren't even 2 million WiiU's out there... soo....
But this also means my Amiibos will be here by thanksgiving. Woot!

Chinese in the Conference Center

You may have heard, but they are having foreign speakers talk in their own language now at conference. The first guy to do it spoke in Cantonese. I know it's completely diff from Mandarin, but still cool. In the conference center they get subtitles, at home we get an english voiceover, which is kinda lame, I'd rather hear the chinese.
Still it's way better than having them struggle in English. They deserve to talk how they want.

Decisions

Traversal in Infamous is just soooo freaking fun, that I find myself going back to that over Mordor most of the time.

Mordor is kinda like a Dark Souls that you and I would be into. And it really is great. I'm gonna play it to death. But when presented with both, I lean towards SS. The story is initially more compelling, and smoke dashing and hovering is just about the best thing ever. Plus I like how bright it is. Which is ironic to say that Seattle is the bright and sunshiny place.

Destiny Impressions

I played some more Destiny, and man, the whole thing is just saying over and over, "this would have been 11/10 if...."

It looks really good, it plays and handles great. Fighting is fun, but to no real end. 

Upgrades are kinda pointless until you hit the super highest and most rare levels. Picking different classes is super pointless. No change in weapons, no change in story, no change in anything. It just changes what your melee LOOKS LIKE. That's it. Still a one hit kill, still using the left hand in some fashion. And I know that people were dogging on the voice acting... and they're totally right. It's Call of Duty syndrome where they think getting a famous name will make us think it's great, but a boring voice is a boring voice. Guilty spark woulda been cooler. It just ends up being the most expensive 7 ever.

Shadow of Mordor Impressions

Remember when I said you're going to love this game? Well it's still true, but maybe even more so. Some initial impressions, no spoilers of any kind. Pure mechanics.

1. There's a rumor that this was supposed to be an Arkham game at first, and you can totally tell. The counter-tap tap tap-counter combat, the dazed enemies and "finishing" moves, all exactly pulled from Batman. Same over the shoulder view, same cape sway. I mean. Even the nemesis system coulda totally fit in with Joker's and Penguin's gangs. But all in all, that's okay. Because I love batman combat.
2. Assassin's Creed creators are trying to stir crap up because they think they stole AC elements. I call BS at this. The only thing that is even close is the "leap of faith", but even that I wouldn't have associated had they not called it out.
3. Combat is actually better than batman, and it's not the same animations. It's really hard, and extremely satisfying. You can go "wraith" mode and its kinda like a ninja gaiden powerup where you move so fast it looks like there's multiples of you. You're gonna love the combat.
4. It's M, and very M. Not an Asher game. Too much blood, and too violent. This is immediate, as soon as the game starts, horrifying things happen. No Asher.
5. Graphics, does it look good? In a word? Sure. But not great. It's kinda like the MK series where they try to overly detail a face and it just ends up looking like when an amateur draws a human portrait with a pencil. Too many details so it looks muddled. That kinda thing happens. Still think it'll look similar on PS3. That said, it doesn't look so bad that it detracts in any way.

All that said, it's just very very fun to play. People are already forgetting about Destiny.

Velocity 2X

This...

FREAKING AWESOME. I played the first four missions, totally the same so far (I haven't gotten to the part where you get out of the ship yet) but it's just smoother, looks better. I'm way impressed, I smell another plat... and lots of anger. Music is so rad too.

Phone Battery

I'm not kidding. I have charged my phone a total of one time since you left. And even that was just to show the phone some affection. It didn't even mean anything to me.

Beyond Episode 362

Altano in the ER3C, and Colin and Greg, it was a good show. They totally did the classic restart the episode about 20 minutes in. I never noticed how often it happened until you brought it up.

Last week Greg read an email asking if Drive Club would be the big hit that would move 10 million more PS4s. He was laughing so hard while reading it at how dumb it was that he was in tears and couldn't even get all the way through it. He brought it up again this week because no one wrote in to defend it. Usually there are hundreds of tweets, but they said they got a whopping 5 emails saying Drive Club should be okay. 

Mordor Gameshare

Thanks for the login info. I got in and finished the first 7 gig download. The rest is done when I try and start the game (think DCUO) where the other 20 gigs will finish.

Destiny PS4 Graphics

It looks almost EXACTLY the same from PS3's beta to PS4. Honestly, that's not so much a knock on the PS4 as a credit it is to the PS3. I'm amazed at what that thing can still do. Now I still haven't seen mordor, but so far I think Second Son is the only one that "can't" run on a PS3.

Amazon buys Twitch

I forget if you saw this before you left, but Amazon bought Twitch for about $2 quinjillion. Give or take.
I don't get Amazon's angle here, other than to put it behind their Prime paywall which would anger the world.

October PS Plus Games Delayed

Kinda lame (entitled gamer lame), news. September is a 5-tuesday month. So we're stuck with Joe Danger all month right? I have been waiting eagerly for the October PS Plus preview.
Today they announced that they WILL announce the October line up on october 1 with games to be available Oct 8. So our free games are not only delayed another week, but we don't even know what they are. Except for Drive Club of course, but I have a feeling that will be more of an extended demo only having a few tracks and cars because we're getting the "PS Plus" edition (i.e. the dwarfed edition)

Super Smash Bros 3DS Reviews

Jose reviewed Smash for 3DS, I immediately groaned and said, "ugh he probably gave it a 10"
Scrolled down and it got an 8.8, which actually makes me want to play it more. That and Little Mac has an alternate costume in his pink-hooded jumpsuit from punch-out.... so i basically have to.

Shadow of Mordor Reviews

The reviews are coming in and they're good.
Some are a bit too excited, Joystiq giving the only 100, IGN also high at 93.
The majority are hovering around the high 80's. And then ever bizarre Destructoid at 60, though they are the minority.
Average right now is 85,

Oldies but Goodies

With all my new retro acquisitions (Castlevania NES, Metroid NES, and Metroid Prime 2 Gamecube) I had a retro night while Destiny finished downloading. It was a blast, some of those games are so good. Both Metroid Primes on gamecube run at 60fps. 60! Way back in 2001. Games today can't do that.

Mordor approacheth

Resogun is HOT

It took a few plays to figure out just what I'm supposed to be doing with saving humans (still not totally sure), but man Resogun is tight. Nothing new or grand, but a cool new take on Stardust. I beat your high score already (which was probably set by Ash by accident). So eat it!

Second Son Updated Thoughts

Played some more Infamous, looks incredible. Love the smoke travel. It's too cool.
Still hate the movement for exploration, but it works in battle, being able to zip around everywhere.
Just had the first decision... so dumb.
1- Turn yourself in.
2- Kill everybody you love.
Come on. There's gotta be a better middle ground than that. It's not even a moral choice, it's just asking if you want to be the ultimate villain or unlikely hero.
I'm still less than 40 minutes in.

Destiny Locked Spot

So like I mentioned, I bought a locked spot on gtz for $5. But something's fishy, it's from a dude who hosted a share and said he'd use the locked spot and sell it later. Which is totally fine, but I worry he doesn't know that you can only have one locked spot at a time. If you try two, it CAN work, but only if you are never playing the game at the same time. Like if I bought Uncharted 4 locked, we could both download it, and whenever I'm not on I could say it's all yours pal. But with someone on GTZ? Forget it.
So I called him out on it, to see if he's trying to keep his share and sell off half. Stay tuned...

Beyond Episode 361

Destin was in the ER3C for this episode. He's spent too long on Unlocked to know what a successful podcast sounds like.

Colin is playing Destiny and describes the game really well in that it's solid, but just completely empty. He can see how everyone is burning out on it. There's just nothing to do. He jokes that they fired the writer after the opening scene, cause that's literally where the story just stops.

Thief Flip

The deed is done and it worked like a charm. Thief showed up one day, and the next someone bought it on Amazon for 10 bucks more. I love dumb people

PS4 is HERE!

It is awesome. I hooked it up right away. It's much smaller than I thought it would be.
Controller feels cool, will take some getting used to
The PS4 interface (no XMB) is pretty bad. No organization. It's just a freaking mess
Strider is the greatest game. Why did no one tell me it was this cool!
Second son so far is alright. Looks great (will probably look dated by the end of the console generation cause they tried a bit too hard on the faces). But it has that infamous floaty jump and awkward movement that I really wish was gone. Maybe I'll get used to it
Played resogun for 6 seconds, just long enough for my controller to talk to me and I freaked out, that's so awesome.

Bombcast

Bombcast from this week was almost a word for word copy of last week's for the first 2 hours

They got into some good convo around Microsoft buying Mojang for 2.5 Bil. They said some stuff I hadn't thought of, like how kids today are gonna grow up and talk about Minecraft the same way we talk about Mario 3, or Zelda Ocarina. But man, Microsoft is gonna market the crap outta that thing and will easily get their money back in no time
Dan actually knows what pears are, and has eaten one. Brad was worried he meant pear jelly bellys, but it turns out its and actual fruit. Though he does eat the jelly bellys too.

TGS Updated

So while Sony themselves were a bit lame, more came from TGS than I first thought.

-MGSV 20 minute gameplay demo (I don't watch those) and a vague release window of somewhere in 2015.
-Kojima revealed a new MGS collection.................... of Clothes. Dead serious. Oh and a foxhound branded ps4.
-Bloodbourne trailer and release date of Feb 6
-COD gameplay, but I skipped that too, cause I wanna head into this one completely dark.
-Vita.... gets a random jrpg called Tales of Heart R. pass. But vita is also getting God Eater 2, i may play that one.
-PS Now beta opens on PS3 today. I'll have to check it out except for the fact that MY PS4 GETS HERE TODAY!)*!U&*(!$ AAHAHHAHA!&#)&$BS
-A final fantasy xv trailer did come out and it looks...interesting. The art is a bit more grounded than previous FF's. Like they're dressed normal (for japan) and driving around in cars, not chocobos. But it's free combat, not turnbased (hooray!) It has a cool mechanic where you are tied to your sword, for example, if you get to a tower and don't wanna walk all the way up, you throw your sword and disappear, then when the sword lands on top you reappear there. Hopefully it's a mix of the old RPGs with whatever mess 13 ended up being though. Graphics look good, but still not that, not mind shattering, but really good.
-And then a ton of other throw away news (3ds non-nintendo games, thomas was alone port, garbage)

Amazon Haul

Remember the Amiibo problem? I had 26 bucks of amazon cred, and amiibos are 13, but shipping and tax turns it into 20 real quick.

Well amazon sent me an email for a free trial of the amazon fire tv, their roku. I accepted and it put the $100 item in the cart and a -$100 at checkout, well i realized this would satisfy the $35+ needed to get free shipping and popped in the two amiibos (link and samus), and bam. Got it all for free with no shipping. (After the 26 promo i had and the free fire rental)

TGS Sony Conference

Sony's presser at TGS was so bad. Nothing. I think there was a Yakuza prequel teaser and that's it.
No Kingdom Hearts, no FF15, or any other JRPG. If you go to IGN they don't even have any headlines up, even they couldn't milk anything out of it.

Beyond Episode 360

Colin is gone to Japan, so it was Greg, Marty, and Daemon. Daemzero was extremely quiet the whole time, like he doesn't know what to do on an actual weekly podcast anymore.

So I have to admit, it's uber lame to have essentially zero texts all day. But on the plus side I haven't had to charge my phone in like a week. So I have that going for me. I may just cancel my texting plan altogether. You shoulda left sooner, I'd have saved so much money.
